Phragmidium mucronatum

1. Identification

Phragmidium mucronatum Schultz is a pathogenic fungus responsible for rose rust, a common disease in ornamental and wild roses. It is characterised by orange to black pustules on leaf surfaces, leading to reduced vigour and premature leaf drop.

2. Causal agent

Basidiomycete fungus, order Pucciniales, family Phragmidiaceae, genus Phragmidium. It produces multicellular urediniospores and teliospores, orange to black in colour, developing in characteristic pustules on leaf surfaces. The pathogen survives in infected tissues and fallen leaves.

3. Main hosts

  • Ornamental roses
  • Wild roses (Rosa spp.)

The fungus shows high specificity to the genus Rosa.

4. Symptoms

Symptoms begin as small yellow spots on the upper leaf surface. On the underside, orange pustules containing urediniospores develop and later turn black as teliospores form. Infected leaves become chlorotic, deformed and fall prematurely. Severe infections reduce plant vigour, photosynthetic capacity and flower production.

5. Disease cycle

Phragmidium mucronatum survives in infected leaves and plant debris.

Dispersal:

  • Urediniospores carried by wind
  • Urediniospores carried by rain
  • Spread through leaf‑to‑leaf contact

Infection:

  • Favoured by high humidity
  • Occurs mainly on young leaves

Polycyclic cycle:

  • Multiple infections throughout the season, with continuous urediniospore production

6. Favourable conditions

Humid environments, persistent dew and moderate temperatures favour disease development. Dense canopies and poor ventilation increase severity. Infected leaves on the ground act as a continuous inoculum source.

7. Disease management

Management focuses on improving ventilation, removing infected leaves and reducing leaf moisture. Using less susceptible varieties and maintaining proper cultural practices reduces disease pressure. Biological control may be applied with authorised antagonists. Chemical control must follow local regulations and alternate modes of action to avoid resistance.
