Fly Trap Cup - Efficient Monitoring of Fruit Flies
The fly trap cup - Tephri type - is a biotechnical trap developed for the monitoring of tephritids (fruit flies) that cause significant damage in crops such as citrus, pome fruits, stone fruits, vines and small fruits. Its structure was designed to maximise the capture and retention of the target insects.
Trap Composition
- Yellow cup in high-density polyethylene, with four lateral holes and an internal inverted funnel for insect entry;
- Four transparent channels, fitted into the lateral holes, hinder the escape of the captured insects;
- Internal basket for placing the pheromone dispenser or solid attractant (purchased separately);
- Translucent lid with a snap-fit system and metal hanger for suspension.
Pheromone Dispenser Installation
- The internal basket must be placed according to the assembly instructions, with the opening facing upwards;
- Install the specific pheromone dispenser (purchased separately) for the species to be monitored (e.g.: Bactrocera oleae, Bactrocera dorsalis, Ceratitis capitata, Rhagoletis cerasi, Rhagoletis completa, among others);
- Add 100 to 250 ml of water with 5 ml of neutral soap or unused vegetable oil to the base of the cup to facilitate the retention of the insects.
Food Attractants
- The TRIMO-LURE® attractant (solid, specific for Mediterranean fruit fly - Ceratitis capitata) (purchased separately) must be placed in the basket or at the base of the cup, with the opening facing upwards, with no need for dilution;
- The BioProtex® trap attractant (liquid, based on hydrolysed protein and urea) (purchased separately) must be diluted at a ratio of 1:2 (1 L of product + 2 L of water) before being placed at the base of the cup.
Location and Distribution
- Install the cups in parts of the tree canopy exposed to the morning sun, but protected from direct sun during the rest of the day;
- Avoid obstructions by leaves or fruits that hinder insect access;
- Place the cups at least 1 metre from the ground; in large trees, position them in the upper third of the canopy.
Monitoring Strategy
- Begin the installation from the outside towards the inside of the plot, in concentric lines of defence;
- Distribute the cups in a staggered manner, with a maximum distance of 50 metres between them;
- The denser the network of traps, the greater the monitoring effectiveness and early detection of the pest.
Dose: 5 to 70 traps/ha (depending on the crop, season and intensity of the attack - consult documentation).
It is recommended that regular monitoring be planned and carried out, both for cleaning and for topping up water / attractant, which naturally undergo evaporation. Monitoring must also be carried out to count and record the captures.
Note: It is advisable to consult the literature available on the species for each zone, region or country, and to follow the recommendations contained in the regular circulars resulting from the activity of the Agricultural Warning Station of each region. The use of pest monitoring methodologies in agricultural crops always presupposes that they are accompanied by a consistent plan for sampling the damage (harm and losses) to production resulting from the pest activity, in order to be aware of the real situation observed in the crop.
